Just this Monday, it was announced at the Bologna Book Fair the winners of the Hans Christian Anderson Award. For those of you who may not know (and that included me for a very long time), the Hans Christian Anderson Award is presented by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) for authors and illustrators who are living and whose “complete works have made a lasting contribution to children’s literature.” And although we here in the states tend to think of the Caldecott and the Newberry being the highest honor an author or illustrator can receive, this is actually one of the highest international honors out there. To be awarded this is a REALLY big deal.
So, naturally we are thrilled that one of our favorite author/illustrators has been awarded this prestigious prize. This year the illustrator honor went to Peter Sis.
Peter Sis has been a staple here at BookPeople for years now. We have often featured his works in various places throughout our store including one year in our yearly catalog when we highlighted his book, The Wall, in 2007. A prolific illustrator, Peter has drawn images for more than just his own books. You can also find his illustrations in such diverse places as The Whipping Boy and more recently, Pam Munoz Ryan’s book The Dreamer.
The point of all my rambling is that we are excited for Peter, and we congratulate him on winning such a wonderful and well-deserved award.
