The next book on the list that I’ve read is Uma Krishnaswami’s wonderful The Grand Plan to Fix Everything. I think this book can be summed up in three words: fun, sweet, and compelling, but here’s my full review.
The Grand Plan to Fix Everything
By Uma Krishnaswami
Dini is in love with all things Bollywood, especially the famous movie star Dolly. She and her best friend Maddie know all the songs and even plan to attend a Bollywood-style dance camp in the summer. At least, that was the plan until Dini’s parents move her to India for the next two years. Now, Dini has a new goal: to meet her beloved Dolly in person. Sure, the town she lives in is no where near Mumbai (or Bombay as the movie fans still call it), but Dini and Maddie figure that it’s still closer to Dolly than Maryland. As she attempts to find Dolly and adjust to her new life, Dini learns that life doesn’t always turn out the way it does in a Bollywood movie.
Like I said before, this book is fun, sweet, and compelling. The characters are funny and very real, especially Dini’s desire to orchestrate her life just like a movie. Her good intentions are sweet to read about, and her irritation will have you frowning with her when people deviate from what should be the script. Finally, the book is a compelling read. Although not an action/adventure or a suspenseful mystery, I still didn’t want to put the book down. I wanted to know what was next.
I would recommend this book for ages 7 & up as a read aloud and 9 & up as a read alone, especially for girls.
