Ah, young love. There’s just nothing like reading about a girl discovering her first true supernatural love. Watching as she falls hopelessly for the vampire, werewolf, fallen angel, or some other undead thing always just pulls at the ol’ heart strings.
Here are some books for those romantic teen girls in your life:
The Vampire Academy — The series has an interesting twist on the vampire myth with vampires falling into two groups — mortal and immortal. It follows vampire protector Rose, a half human/half mortal vampire as she tries to keep her best friend and royal vampire safe. (And I hear that the last book in the series, the one pictured, is well on it’s way to being a #1 New York Times Bestseller.)
Beautiful Creatures — This novel presents a twist by having the boy fall in love with a supernatural girl who continually needs to save him. It’s also a good example of Southern Gothic, not something you see much of in the Teen section.
Tantalize — Written by local author, Cynthia Leitich Smith, this series features a vampire, a werewolf, and a fallen angel. That’s right, it hits the Trifecta. Set in Austin, Dallas, and Chicago, the first two books in the series introduce us to a world where vampires and werewolves are not exactly accepted but expected. In the first novel, Quincie hires a chef for her family’s restaurant who has, shall we say, unusual tastes. In the second book, Zachary, a fallen guardian angel, tries to redeem the girl he lost to a vampire. In the third book, due out at the beginning of 2011, it is my personal belief that Quincie and Zachary will come together to save the world. But that’s just my guess. I don’t actually have any information that this is even remotely the case. (It would be awfully cool though. Just saying.)
Shiver — Told in alternating points of view between a werewolf and the girl that loves him, the two search to try to find a cure for Sam’s werewolfism.
Sunshine — People don’t survive a vampire survive a vampire attack — until Sunshine does. With the help of an unusual ally, Sunshine must find her own power from within to overcome the vampire overlord now set on destroying her. Although not a romance in the traditional sense, this book still has some romantic elements between Sunshine and her vampire. And it is just such a well-written and beautifully crafted book, that I had to include it.
Of course, there are a whole bunch of other paranormal romances you could get (there’s no shortage of paranormal romances being produced), but these are some of my favorites, and the ones I’m most likely to recommend to customers in the store.
