I know we blab on and on about our favorite fantasy books. And yes, that can be irritating to those who prefer fact to fiction. But we can sometimes pull our heads out of the clouds long enough to appreciate a little reality, and to prove it, I wanted to mention a few great new nonfiction titles that will be coming out this month as well as one that’s been out a while but deserves a little notice.
Earth Matters: An Encyclopedia of Ecology has been out a few months, but it is so beautiful and important that I want to talk about it anyway. Printed on recycled materials and filled with absolutely stunning photography, this encyclopedia of ecology explores each of the world’s delicate ecosystems and the life it supports.
Emphasizing our world’s beautiful fragility and the interdependency of its remarkably complex systems, this book imparts one important message: earth matters.
The Mayflower and the Pilgrim’s New World
By Nathaniel Philbrick
Releases September 4
From the pilgrims’ epic odyssey over the seas to their uneasy alliances with the Native Americans to the brutal horrors of the King Phillip’s War that followed, this absorbing account follows the impact of the Mayflower’s famous voyage to the New World.
Young history buffs will love this kid-friendly adaptation of Philbrick’s Mayflower, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

In what is sure to be a big hit, Swords: An Artist’s Devotion presents a loving ode to the history of swordscraft and swordsmanship.
The illustrations and diagrams are gorgeous, the tiny tidbits of trivia and obscure vocabulary lessons are detailed enough for the most avid fan, and the history is fascinating enough for a layman. Dipping into sword-wielding traditions through history, from those of the ninja and samurai to those of war maidens and knights of errantry, Ben Boos has created a gloriously crafted wonderland for sword enthusiasts and novices alike.
